The temptation of luxury in politics
By Lynda Dematteo
English
During the 2017 French presidential elections, the right-wing candidate was discredited for having been offered and having accepted three luxury suits. This public outrage that ensued raises questions around presidentiability in the Fifth Republic and the role that luxury garment plays in the relationships between politicians and the processes of empowerment. If the man that rises to the highest office of the state must pay homage to the people he represents by means of his high style, he cannot display his taste for luxury goods unless risk losing his Republican credibility.
