Fiction vs. propaganda: Disenchanting China

By Yinde Zhang
English

The propaganda China has set up in order to legitimize its will to power is proving both coercive and demagogic. Contrary to the tendency, attested inside and outside, including in the West, to yield to the siren calls, Chinese writers and artists intend to disenchant the grand narrative of the nation, by mobilizing the critical power of imagination, which is transgressive and demystifying. A political counter-fiction is formulated with various geographical inspirations, so as to outline a space of awakening, in contrast to the orchestrated dream about the rejuvenation for the sake of a self-centered and expansionist country.
