Memorial: Writing History and Advocating Human Rights Despite Repression and Exile

The history of Memorial associations in Russia, which were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022, is the history of several generations who, since 1988, have engaged in documenting and disseminating a history of the USSR that had previously been enshrouded and distorted. Besides, they have been committed to defending human rights. This history spans 30 years, prompted by the numerous aspirations that emerged in the USSR in the late 1980s. This commitment persists today in a vastly altered context, amidst escalating repression and exile for many involved in this cause.
