“Pearl is as good as a lictor for a lady when she walks abroad” (Pliny the Elder): the signs of luxury in Ancient Rome (1st century BCE-2nd century CE)

This paper explores various features of the language of luxury in ancient Rome, from the 1st century BCE to the 2nd century CE. My main aims in this article are to display its semiotic virtuosity and draw parallels with today’s world.
