This paper explores the role of animal behavioural sciences in (re)defining the boundary between humans and other species. The merits and limits of the ethological perspective are discussed before presenting, by means of examples articulated around four concepts – tool use, culture, communication and consciousness – some cracks opened by recent scientific advances within the traditional representations of this boundary. In conclusion, implications of this research for other academic and societal spheres are put forward.
