The lengthy childhood of the cinephile
By Marc Cerisuelo
English
The bond with cinema originates very soon, mainly in childhood, the age of many a discovery soon to become habits. Such a bond is not so much strong for the alleged “quality” of the motion pictures : it is not indeed a matter of taste or appreciation. “Going to the movies” matters much more than “watching a film”. As a free variation on this topic, this article refers to Stanley Cavell’s The World Viewed (1971-1979) and to Jean-Luc Godard’s Histoire(s) du cinéma (1988-1998). Its intention is above all to be a personal contribution to the collective history of moviegoers.
