Anti-Black racism in the United States, from Obama to Trump

Briefly seen as a sign of the advent of a “post-racial” America, Obama’s election as President of the United States quickly gave rise to a resurgence of racialist analyses and openly racist acts, as well as other forms of indirect racism, without mention of “race”. Donald Trump’s election in 2016 reinforced this double trend by freeing the forces of white nationalism. Following in the footsteps of Eduardo Bonilla Silva in Racism without Racists and David Theo Goldberg in The Threat of Race, this article seeks to unravel the various manifestations of racism in the United States during the Obama and Trump years to show how, despite the historic election of the first black president, these recent expressions reflect a long evolution in the relationship between racism and racialism in the United States.
