Atmosphere as the fundamental concept of a new aesthetics

The aesthetics of atmospheres redefines the topics and objects of aesthetics and increases its relevance. Drawing on Hermann Schmitz’s definition, the author places the feeling body at the centre of human experience and highlights the importance of the production of atmospheres. They emerge from constellations of things and persons, but also directly radiate from things. In many areas of social life, workers of aesthetics master the skills for producing atmospheres. In politics, as well as in market economy, one must become more and more aware of this growing aesthetisation, to be able to address the risks resulting from it —more particularly the generalized waste of resources.
