The Struggle for Reputation in the Hobbesian Model
By Barbara CarnevaliEnglish
The subject of this paper is Hobbes’s position within the history of the philosophical problem of reputation. My discussion is divided into three parts : a short introduction in which I specify how this issue is related to that of social recognition ; an attempt at a definition as well as a theoretical/historical analysis of the ground-breaking « Hobbesian model », through which Hobbes formulated the question of reputation in modern thought as a struggle for signs of honour ; a balanced appraisal of the persistence of Hobbes’ approach throughout a certain tradition of the social thought, in particular in the economy of symbolic goods by Pierre Bourdieu.
