Although the notions of “Performance” and “Performativity” have recently emerged within the French context, they remain insufficiently understood and the issues they entail remain somewhat unclear. The present article reviews Schechner’s ideas, which are at the origin of the vast movement of Performance Studies, and emphasizes their paradoxes and possible uses.
