Fieldwork: An Anthropological Theater

By Bernard Müller
English

This paper envisions fieldwork as a device designed by researchers during the elaboration of their research object. A parallel should be established between this heuristic installation and the creative process of a theatrical production or of an artistic performance. By acknowledging the inability of anthropologists to take the necessary distance during the research process, the author invites the researchers to take on the role of co-creators of a social situation and draw the appropriate consequences in terms of their methodology. This paper aims at building a theoretical bridge linking art and social anthropology.
