Installations and Happenings: Dangerous Relationships?

The aesthetic forms “Installations” and “Happenings”, both emerged in the late 1950s, and are often practiced by the same artists, influenced by the teachings of John Cage. Like him, their emphasis is on the modes of expression that simultaneously address all of the senses and produce art from the seemingly improvised and unpredictable frameworks and attitudes of their creators-now transformed into performers. Even if “Installations” primarily rely upon their locations and “Performances” upon movement, they often share a common basis.
