A Tragedy?

Now more than ever, the need of appearance has become an individual undertaking: individuals have to show what they are in their style and look. This does not preclude the existence of group norms. Thinness represents a good example nowadays. Is it necessarily a “tragic” torture? That is hard to say, as it blends into a broader cultural framework, where aesthetics goes along with efficiency. Thus, the deep-rooted sense of our culture becomes inescapable, especially as thinness can have a more “liberating” meaning. Finally, it is difficult to overlook the harsh criticism fashion has constantly been the target of. However, can a “fashion-free” society be envisaged?
