Fifty years after the publication of La musique et la machine by Umberto Eco, we develop some of the principles presented in this essay and envisage them in a media and communication theory as well as in an actor network theory perspective. This discussion, building on the analysis of key moments in the socio-technical history of recorded music, sheds light on the controversies that have arisen since the developments in this field and still accompany it today.
