Clanking of Chains
Music as an Improvement of the Workplace in an Automobile Factory
By Benoît GautierEnglish
This paper focuses on how automobile factory line workers try to make the workplace more enjoyable through personalized music. This practice, which is tolerated to varying degrees, leads to more or less intense conflicts and has been shown to exacerbate tensions, both among the workers themselves and with their supervisors due to differences in musical tastes. All this antagonism can be understood as a consequence of the “conflict” between the tempo of line work and the rhythms of the musical environments.
