The “Right Look for the Job”

Despite French laws to promote equality on the labor market, some of which penalize employers for discrimination based on the physical appearance, various studies invite us to look at how a person’s physical characteristics can impact his or her employment prospects. Thanks to an empirical approach, based on several different methods, the paper highlights how and to what extent physical appearance affects job applicants’ chances. Calling on those involved on both sides of the hiring process, the author uncovers the conditions inherent in the “right look for the job.”
