The Building Caretaker: Experiences and Sensations
By Pascal Ughetto
English
A building superintendent’s job often entails the daily psychological navigation of spaces that are genuinely sensitive to the senses. A super’s sensorial faculties are put to the test. For instance, regarding smells. When cleaning, the super must keep under control a whole series of repulsions, anxieties and disagreeable sensations, so as not to be hampered in fulfilling the janitorial part of the job. Deepening the observation, the paper also shows that it is not necessarily the senses that are the most difficult to keep under control: conflict with residents over ‘values’ is even harder to cope with.
