Multitasking, or Is Work Still an Experience?

By Alexandra Bidet

The traditional and widespread mechanistic picture of work reduces it to an amount of force. This view still underlies many approaches, such as those in terms of intensification. Yet in the digital age, the main feature of work is more likely to be its growing intrinsic heterogeneity. By introducing the notion of experience, John Dewey offers us tools for a deeper understanding of today’s workplace. A critical point is whether contemporary work can meet the need for a continuous and consistent experience. This notion focuses upon what work produces for the workers themselves. It prompts us to gain deeper insights into temporal aspects, by taking into account both the dynamic of life trajectories and the rhythmicity of activities.
