Intimacy and Extimacy
By Serge Tisseron
English
Intimacy is essential to human life, yet it manifests itself in ways that are incessantly affected by the wish for "extimacy." Extimacy is the movement that repositions some elements of our intimate lives into the public domain so as to have a feedback as to their value. It differs from both exhibitionism and conformism. It contributes at the same time to the development of self-esteem, to the establishment of a richer intimacy, and to the creation of additional social ties. It provides a better insight into online empathy, as well as into pathological practices.
