On the Sensorial Perception of the Other in the South of Morocco (Tafilalt, Aït Atta)

By Marie-Luce Gélard
English

In the Saharan context (a sedentarized village in Morocco), the language economy offers a predominant position to the expression of the senses. This sensory communication, freed from more “classical” analyses (body language, proxemics, interactionism, etc.) allows us to understand how sensory choices give a unique tonality to the expressions of self. This text deals mainly with the sensorial organs of smelling in a twofold approach; first, it links perfume with feminine rituals at birth and marriage as a gained right to fragrant finery and the second is part and parcel of a good number of religious rituals: perfumes and intercession, the “feminine holy.”
