Eros as a Messenger of the Senses

The Sensorial Foundations of the Monte Verità
By Olivier Sirost
English

Community experiences and return to nature movements multiplied across Europe at the end of the nineteenth century. These experiences were founded on liberation of the instincts and the senses, called “Erotic Nacktkultur.” Eros myth relates sensorium discovery where new education, leisure, free love, and body emancipation contribute to the European cultural revolution. People of the Monte Verità community practice nature curative, vegetarianism, cubism, naturism, feminism, oriental meditation, modern dance, body expressivity, and psychoanalysis. Behind those forms of back-to-nature, sensual relationship, body sensorium, and senses communications founded the new culture of the twentieth century.
